Federal platforms

Supplemental reference · Browse supplements · Current report

Federal support can fund machines, data systems, workflow services or operator teams. It does not automatically give every instructor an account or reserved GPUs. These 32 selected families overlap; this is not a machine census.

Start with ACCESS for the proposed CPU + GPU classroom allocation. For research, match the work to batch pools, interactive services, data fabrics and mission-specific routes. OSPool’s opportunistic jobs differ from a live notebook service; PATh Facility credit eligibility differs from OSPool access.

IDSS/MESA: an operator/service grant is not a generic teaching entitlement. Confirm the actual service, present support, eligible users and underlying provider policy. MESA funding alone does not establish PATh credit eligibility.

32 resources

compute

ACCESS

Broad CPU/GPU research and instruction; resource discovery and support.

Access: ACCESS project request; exchange credits for provider resources

Limits and sources

Provider quotas, scheduling, allocation term and software vary. Counts overlap with participating resource providers.

Funding: NSF-funded coordination + separately funded resource providers

ACCESS · national resource and support federation

compute

OSG Open Science Pool (OSPool)

Independent text/image analyses, parameter sweeps, model evaluation and many short CPU/GPU jobs.

Access: Documented guest education notebook or facilitated full event accounts

Limits and sources

Guest four-hour timeout/files may be lost; full accounts usually end shortly after event. Interruptible fair share; complete/checkpoint jobs within 20 hours. No sensitive/proprietary data or classroom GPU reservation.

Funding: NSF PATh/IRIS-HEP + institutional/DOE in-kind contributions

OSG · consortium, funding and services · OSPool · opportunistic high-throughput capacity · OSPool · documented education access · OSPool · data and access-point rules

compute

PATh Facility

Dedicated throughput research jobs when the affiliated NSF program and credits are confirmed.

Access: Consult PATh; NSF-funded project startup/credit process

Limits and sources

IDSS is not explicitly listed in the published affiliated-program policy. MESA funding alone does not establish eligibility or course authorization; confirm with PATh/NSF. Separate from OSPool education access.

Funding: NSF PATh

compute

NRP / Nautilus

Hosted teaching notebooks, GPUs, open-weight model APIs and containerized services.

Access: Institutional onboarding; hosted JupyterHub, API or project namespace

Limits and sources

Hosted hub starts with 5 GB homes; larger storage, class/GPU quota and hub-specific exceptions need approval. Ordinary-pod six-hour rules do not establish every hub limit. Not archival storage; idle volumes may be purged.

Funding: NSF-supported platform + participating institutions

compute

Jetstream2

Notebooks, RStudio, desktops, web/database teaching servers and vGPU environments.

Access: ACCESS allocation, course images and student/project access

Limits and sources

Always-on VM accounting, separate GPU exchange, concurrent quota and extra storage need approval. Independent backups required. Expiry/overdraw disables access and can destroy unresolved resources after thirty days.

Funding: NSF research-cloud infrastructure

compute

NAIRR / NAIRR Classroom

AI coursework, GPUs, model/data/tools and selected managed environments.

Access: Appropriate researcher or Classroom request

Limits and sources

Funding: NSF-led federal partnership + public/private contributions

NAIRR Classroom · AI teaching resource request

compute

CloudBank / CloudBank Classroom

Managed Python/R/C++ browser environments with login and student storage.

Access: General ACCESS Explore Classroom route; separate NAIRR Classroom route for AI coursework

Limits and sources

Funding: NSF-funded experimental infrastructure

Chameleon · funded experimental cloud testbed

testbed

enabler

Open OnDemand + JupyterHub / BinderHub

Notebooks, RStudio, VS Code, remote desktops and visual/science gateways.

Access: Use provider-installed portal or deploy on approved compute

Limits and sources

Software is not hardware/time allocation. Only Open OnDemand’s funding is evidenced here; no claim that every JupyterHub installation is federally funded. Operators and backing resources remain necessary.
